Galveston, or the town of Galves, was named after the Spanish military and political leader of the 18th century: Bernardo de Galves and Madrid, Count Galves (1746–1786), who was born in Cherbourg, Malaga, in the Kingdom of Spain. The first European settlements of Galveston on Galveston Island were built around 1816 by the French pirate Louis-Michel Uri to help the young Mexican Republic fight for its independence from Spain, along with other colonies in the western hemisphere of Central and South America in the 1810s and 1820s. Galveston was founded in 1825 by the Mexican Congress following its independence from Spain.
